Poetry Quest – the Schools

The Nottingham schools taking part were Riverside Primary School, Berridge Junior School, Carlton Central Junior School and Glapton Primary School.

Over a three month period the children visited Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery. Here and back in the classroom they worked with professional poet and visual artist Deborah Tyler Bennett and Hannah Sawtell who helped them to understand and respond to the poems they had heard.

The children then created their own ‘poetry tipis’.  These were artworks in themselves, doubling as magical performance spaces in which children experienced the pleasure of telling their own epic stories through poetry. The tipis were displayed for two weeks in the grounds of Nottingham Castle.  All local schools  – and Robin Hood – were invited to a celebration event where the children read their poems alongside their tipis.

Later, the tipis made by all of the schools taking part nationally were displayed in a celebration in Kensington Park in  London in the presence of a royal guest.
