The Expedition
Out on the waves, looking for dolphins,
Out on the waves, in a bumpy boat,
Out on the waves, racing along,
Out on the waves, hanging on tight,
Out on the waves.
Giggling girls holding on for dear life,
Navy blue lifejackets, blue and black wetsuits,
Hoping for giraffes, for crocodiles, for penguins, for sharks.
Out on the waves, under the water,
Dolphins and seals are gliding.
Out on the waves, over the water,
Seagulls, herons, cormorants and shags are sailing
Out on the waves where the guillemots spit
Out on the waves where we see no whales,
No seals, no dolphins, no nothing but waves
Back from the waves, back from the water, back to Glachbeg
Singing all the way, back to home and back to bed!

From 18th Century prints to 20th Century postcards, from Erasmus Darwin’s provocative poetry to accounts of the arrival of the railways, we’ll play with words and images, compose poems, write postcards, and draw inspiration from the Dales around us
Meeting point: White Lodge Car Park on A6 just south of Taddington
(Monsal Dale bus stop). Dress to suit the weather!
creative and entertaining activity for families, walkers and other visitors to DoveDale
on the Words and Wonders walk we encountered an ash tree poised on the very edge of the river, its roots either hanging grimly onto the stones or reaching out like uncertain toes to test the water. It could easily have come straight out of one of our 18th Century prints while the feeling of poised tension inspired us on our 21st century expedition….
The spirit moves
through the river
on her soft water
journey the still
bubbles rumble
as water
tumbles through the rocks
the trees hang with
bated breath
touching the bank
with his tremulous
roots
