Take One Shoe

Take One Shoe is part of Northampton Museum & Art Gallery’s annual programme for schools, inspired by the National Gallery’s Take One Picture programme.  Each year a shoe or pair of shoes is selected from the Designated Shoe Collection to inspire cross-curricular work in the classroom. This year we have chosen a pair of Chinese Child’s shoes dating from 1920-1925.
During a one-day Continuing Professional Development course at the Museum, teachers attend workshops and talks to help them understand different ways into using just one shoe. In addition, we make a film about the chosen shoe or shoes to help teachers engage with their pupils. This year’s film is based on a Chinese folk tale and is available on our YouTube site:
The challenge for schools is to use the shoe imaginatively in the classroom, both as a stimulus for artwork, and for work in more unexpected curriculum areas. Northampton Museum & Art Gallery will have a small display of pupils’ work relating to the Chinese shoes during the Autumn term 2012.
